Google Features Chapter 3- Google Keywords

A previous chapter in the Google Features series of blogs, saw a discussion on the possibilities made available to users through Google Adwords.  When beginning your Adwords campaign, another feature that can prove invaluable and used hand-in-hand with Adwords is Keywords.

This feature is extremely useful and an interesting way to discover what users of the internet want to know about your industry.  Once you have used Keywords to research this, you can directly address the thoughts and issues held by your target audience.

Keywords basically shows you, the exact phrases that have been used by consumers browsing the internet via the Google search engine to find information or answer questions on specific topics. The site allows you to enter in a key phrase that you associate with your business and the draws up a list of commonly used search terms of a similar nature.

Knowing the terms used within your industry can make it easy to understand what your clients want to know, and which words they are using to find answers to their issues within your industry. These can lead you to understand the most effective words you should be buying when creating your Adwords campaign so that your advertisements connect with the most appropriate audiences.

Simply search a word that is reflective of your business and that you believe users will type to find information regarding what you do.

Example:

In a previous post focused solely on Google Adwords I used the example of costume jewelry. I will use it again today to illustrate the kind of results you should expect when using Google Keywords. Simply type in a phrase that you associate with your business for example, gold necklace into the keyword tool and then browse the results:

The results that are shown, list the amount of times particular relevant  phrases have been searched Globally and in your country. There are similar phrases that have been searched that could also be bought to advertise your goods. The competition column on the chart shows the amount of people who use the specific phrase and the competition you will have for the adwords that you buy. The more competition that there is for the word, the more expensive the phrase is likely to be.

These keywords that are constantly being searched for can also form a basis for the text used on your site. If the wording used throughout your webite is keyword rich (particularly using phrases that you know are being searched) then you can utilise this to improve your SEO, and move your website up the search results for relevant audiences.

A further use for the keywords tool is to help you create SEO friendly blog post titles for your website. When beginning to write your blog post, you can research your chosen topic to discover what your audience wants to know, through their search terms use. Often, the search terms used can create interesting and effective blog titles.

Example:

I have used the phrase Social Networking in order to illustrate the blog titles that can be procured from the search terms used by the public. In this particular search the titles “Social Networking Facts”, “Top 10 Social Networks” and “What Is A Social Network”.

Early on in the list, you are given a perfectly useful (and commonly searched) blog post title! Social networking facts is searched by 8,100 people each day throughout the world and 1,300 in the United Kingdom. By using this method to find blog titles, you are ensured that you are writing stories that your audience wants to read and are interested in.

And so concludes the latest chapter of the Google features, use the Keywords tool to your advantage, and look forward to the next chapter in the series, giving you vital information about the newest member of the Google family, Google +.
