Branding News (wk end 5/2/10)

This weeks branding news digest

Deep V Diving

A few weeks ago I told you about the ‘Virgin SpaceShipTwo’, essentially a plane that flies into space.  Well, now more breaking Virgin news with this week’s announcement that Branson has expanded the brand further with an underwater plane!

The ‘Necker Nymph’ (don’t ask me?!) is a three-person aero-submarine, which has been designed to mimic the flight patterns of an aeroplane below the water’s surface.

Unlike other submarine vessels, which use ballast to propel themselves under water, the Nymph uses downward ‘lift’ on the wings to make its descent.

The design, as you would expect, is inerrant.  Much like the SpaceShipTwo, the Necker Nymph is white with the same cosmic blue featured on the Virgin Galactic Crafts.

If you can imagine a cross between a Bugatti Veyron and Thunderbird 4, you’re halfway there!

Check out the ‘Necker Nymph’ here before you start saving around £16,000 for a ride (only available if you rent the £56,000 a week Virgin catamaran!).

Branded T-Shirts

Ever thought about using Cindy Crawford to promote your printing business?  Or how about Naomi Campbell advertising your car valleting business?  If that sounds a little out of your league then you may be interested in the new business venture of Tanaya Henry.

Tanaya is a New York-based professional model who has worked for the likes of L’Oreal, Microsoft, VH1 and now potentially you!

The idea is that Tanaya will wear your company branded t-shirt for one day, do a professional photo shoot wearing your t-shirt, write a blog post about how “kick-ass” your company is, and she’ll “even talk about your company to all of my model friends!”

Tanaya’s pricing model is as unusual as her brand promotion efforts: She’s selling each day at “face value”, for example February 5th would cost you $36 (since it’s the 36th day of the year).

It’s not a particularly new idea.  I remember when I was at University some of my student friends were paid to walk around with company logos on their faces!  Nevertheless, whilst times are tough, innovative and cost effective means of getting your brand seen are key.

I may not have modelled for L’Oreal but today I’m wearing my Xposure branded t-shirt and I would also like to take this opportunity to blog about how “kick ass” the company is!

How many Adverts Can You Spot?

And since it’s Friday, I’ve got a little treat for you now!  Check out this brilliant animation based on British adverts from over the years.

It’s a great example of what excellent branding and marketing can achieve.  The animation doesn’t feature Company logos but it’s still easy to spot the various adverts and be reminded of the brands.

The video is a fantastic concept, brilliantly executed and aesthetically gorgeous.

Some are more obvious than others and some are a little cryptic.  See how many you can spot, I guarantee you’ll find more every time you watch it!

Enjoy!
